Konami Income Falls But Profits Soar By 70%

Konami, the publisher of games like Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain and PES 2017, has reported a 70 percent increase in profits for the nine months ending December 31, 2016, in year-on year terms.

The company made ¥29.59 billion / $261 million in operating profit for that period, compared to ¥17.42 billion / $153 million for the same time span in 2015.

The profit increase comes despite a drop in revenue: the publisher's income totalled ¥163.94 billion / $1.45 billion for that nine month period in 2016, which represents an 8.5 percent fall compared to 2015.

Konami says it managed to increase profits by combining its arcade games business and its Pachinko machines business into one--now called its "amusement business." Konami also highlighted the strong performance of mobile titles like PES Club Manager and Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links.

Konami also has a substantial health and fitness division, its second-biggest section in terms of revenue.

In its last financial report, Konami said PES 2017 had experienced a "strong performance." On the horizon for the company in 2017 is Metal Gear Survive, a multiplayer stealth game coming to Xbox One, PS4, and PC. The spinoff is set in the same universe as Metal Gear Solid V and takes place after the events of Ground Zeroes.
